Fall Fun at Residential Concepts:
During the month of October, the residents here at RCI had an absolute blast doing all the fun, fall-themed activities. From pumpkin patches to educational, Halloween-themed science experiments- check it all out below!
Pumpkin Patch Fun
We kicked off October by visiting one of our favorite fall destinations, Shaw Farms. The historic farm boasts a huge corn maze, horse and tractor hayrides, and farm fresh pumpkins. While there,we checked out Shaw’s farm animals, made it through the corn-fusing maze, picked out pumpkins, and browsed the fall decorations at the farm’s vintage shop!
Fall Fest
This October, we embraced the fall season and celebrated with our day program participants and their families at our first ever Fall Fest! To prepare for our big day, we spent days transformingone of our day program sites into a beautiful fall landscape equipped with game stations, autumndecorations, and a dining hall.
As participants and their families strolled along the festival path, they stopped at seven (7) stations: the Fall Photo Booth, Pumpkin Bowling, Karaoke (and enjoyed Apple Cider Slushies), Giant Inflatable Plinko, Giant Connect Four, Smash Pumpkins Whack-A-Mole, and the “Contact Paper Pumpkin” craft station. Once everyone had visited each station, we all gathered for acatered BBQ lunch!
RCI’s Fall Fest was a great opportunity to bring everyone together, have so much fun, and embrace the beauty of fall!
Pumpkin Guts Slime
Talk about gross! But from the “fang-tastic” smiles on everyone’s face, they all had an ooey, gooey sensory experience making this slime! After gathering our ingredients, the group took 6 ounces of glue, poured it into a mixing bowl full of pumpkin flesh and seeds, then stirred in ¼ cup of warm water. Next, they stirred in ¼ cup liquid starch for 2 minutes. Once the consistency of the slime was stretchy and no longer sticky, they added in green food coloring to resemble guts!
3D Halloween Spell Books
Talk about spook-takular! Groups took old hardback books from the thrift store and in a few simple steps, transformed them into enchanted spell books! First, they generously covered the outside cover of the book with Mod Podge and layered on a paper towel for texture and a “worn”look. Then they used hot glue to create depth and designs on the book (like spiderwebs), added the book’s title, then let everything dry. Next, they applied a layer of brown paint over the book’s cover. Once dry, they used metallic brown and gold paints to highlight the hot glue designs.
Witches Brew Science Experiment
With this experiment, we witnessed a chemical reaction that fizzed and bubbled because ofmixing an acid and a base. To set up this science experiment, we filled each small cauldron with a heaping tablespoon of baking soda. Next, we added a few drops of food coloring into each cauldron. Then we added ¼ cup of vinegar into the cauldrons and watched the cauldron bubble and overflow!
