Our Gardens Provide a Sense of Pride!
June has been a busy and fun month for our residents at Residential Concepts! RCI is certified by the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (ODDD) to provide Adult Day Support (ADS) Services demonstrating a dedication to quality care and support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With a strong emphasis on skill acquisition, community engagement, and personal empowerment, RCI’s ADS services are tailored to enhance the lives of those it serves. Gardening has been a huge part of engaging our residents in hands-on practical skills that they enjoy.
We Are Busy Bees
After planting a slew of flowers, herbs, and vegetables in the gardens at the day program mid-May, during the month of June, while hot and mainly dry, we witnessed the vegetable gardens grow at rapid speed! In the mornings, before the heat of the day, we were “busy bees” making sure the plants were watered and the gardens were free of weeds. With temperatures in the 90s, these tasks had to be completed first.
Fruits of Labor
Towards the end of June, our hard work had paid off and we got to enjoy the “fruits of our labor.” Tomato plants were blooming and bearing fruit. We picked green, poblano, jalapeno, banana, and sweet peppers along with zucchini and squash. We also cut fresh herbs like cilantro and parsley and were even able to harvest lettuce!
Activities Filled with Fun and a Sense of Pride
Gardening is just one of the fun activities we have available at our day program. Research has shown that spending time in the garden provides multiple important health benefits. It can aid with stress-relief, mental wellness, and mobility. Digging in the dirt, working with our hands, watering, pulling weeds, and harvesting truly brings a “sense of pride” to everyone who made the gardens at the day program successful!
