Snow for Days
January 2025 was nothing short of memorable! With record snow totals and temperatures dropping below zero degrees, we all experienced Mother Nature making history! And while the snow was beautiful and glistening, seeing it cover the ground for a month and having to get through it safely, was exhausting. But it wasn’t all bad…while the winter weather created hectic conditions outside, inside RCI’s Adult Day Program, we had a great time together working on fun winter crafts such as No Sew Sock Penguins, Polar Bear Cups, Mason Jar Snow Globes, and Cotton Ball Igloos.
Cozy up with Hot Cocoa
When cold weather strikes, one thing that can make it better is Hot Cocoa! We celebrated this nostalgic treat in new ways this month! For instance, one group made Hot Cocoa Slime that smelled great, and it was smooth and fluffy. By taking simple household ingredients like saline solution, glue, baking soda, shaving cream, cocoa powder, and vanilla, the group created a fun sensory play activity. Moreover, another group prepared a delicious Hot Cocoa Poke Cake dessert for everyone to sample!
Exploding Snowmen
Being stuck indoors during the winter can be quite gloomy. So, to add some excitement, we performed a hands-on science experiment, called The Exploding Snowman! For materials we gathered sandwich bags, permanent markers, baking soda, white vinegar, and paper towels. First,we used the markers to draw snowman faces on the sandwich bags. Then we wrapped 3 teaspoons of baking soda inside a piece of paper towel to form a packet and placed the baking soda packet inside our sandwich bags. Next, we poured about 1-2 cups of white vinegar into the sandwich bags and sealed them up quickly. Within seconds, the bag swelled up, we stood back, and watched it go BOOM! We had so much fun doing this science experiment!
